After three rounds, World Senior Chess Championship which is underway in the city of Greece, Kamena Vourla, has two leaders – Georgian Nona Gaprindashvili (2350) and German Martina Beltz (2097). In the previous round the German beat current world champion Galina Strutinskaya (Russia, 2325) with black pieces. Gaprindashvili defeated another Russian Natalia Titorenko (2137) with white pieces. In the 4th round the leaders will play against each other. Beltz will play with white pieces.
Other two Georgians are participating in the Greek tournament. Tamar Khmiadashvili (2115) and Nino Melashvili (2128) have one-one victory and 2-2 draws. They are in the 4th and 6th place with 2-2 points. Khmiadashvili will play against Yelena Ankudinova of Kazakhstan (2147) with white pieces. Melashvili will play against Natalia Beliaeva of Russia (2006) with black pieces.
128 chess players from 39 countries are competing in the championship. The tournament is based on Swiss system and 11 rounds will be held. World Senior Championship will end up on November 25.
It is the 23rd World Senior Championship. Tamar Khmiadashvili (1998, 1999, 2003) and Nona Gaprindashvili (1995, 2009) have won this title from Georgians.
